A rock driveway is a layered system
The surface rock is what you see, but the base and drainage decide how the driveway performs. Soft subgrade, trapped water and thin material lead to ruts and potholes no matter how nice the top layer looked on day one.
We look at the route, slope, traffic and water before choosing the repair. Sometimes the answer is reshaping and adding aggregate. Sometimes weak material needs to be removed and the base rebuilt. Same driveway, very different job.
LOOK AT THE DRIVEWAY
Rock-driveway work for access that lasts
The scope should match the failure—not just cover it.
New driveway base
Excavate or shape the route, prepare subgrade and build aggregate in compacted lifts.
Regrading and repair
Cut potholes and ruts, restore crown or cross-slope and reconnect the drive to existing grades.
Drainage improvements
Add or reshape ditches, swales and crossing points so water does not stay in the travel surface.
A load of rock can hide a problem for a while. A base and drainage plan is what keeps the repair from becoming an annual tradition.
Slope and runoff decide where repairs start
Lake Oswego driveways can climb, curve and pass close to mature landscaping or neighboring properties. Water follows those same slopes, so drainage must be planned with the drive—not added after the ruts return.
If work disturbs a larger area or sits close to a water feature, City erosion-control requirements may apply. We build the driveway scope around the approved limits and practical equipment access.

The surface is the last step. The useful work happens underneath it.
01 — Read the failure
Identify soft spots, rutting, standing water and traffic patterns.
02 — Shape the route
Establish width, elevation and drainage before adding new aggregate.
03 — Build the base
Place and compact the specified rock in workable lifts.
04 — Finish and connect
Set the surface, shoulders and transitions so the drive sheds water and meets adjoining grades.
Lake Oswego rock-driveway FAQs
Can you repair an existing gravel driveway?
Yes. The right repair depends on whether the problem is surface loss, poor shape, weak base or drainage. We look at the cause before recommending material.
What kind of rock should I use?
That depends on the layer and intended traffic. Compactable base and surface aggregate have different jobs, while clean rock is usually reserved for drainage.
Will a gravel driveway need maintenance?
Yes. Traffic and weather move aggregate over time. Good base preparation and drainage reduce maintenance, but they do not eliminate it.
Want a driveway that works through winter?
Show us the ruts, slopes and places water collects. We’ll help separate a surface touch-up from a base or drainage repair before you order another load.
