Sewer work depends on grade and coordination
A sewer lateral needs a continuous, approved grade without low areas that hold waste or water. Excavation has to account for depth, bedding, existing utilities, safe access and the points where licensed plumbing work and inspection occur.
Albany has a Sewer Lateral Replacement Program for qualifying properties. The City describes open-trench and pipe-bursting methods and uses post-installation video inspection to check grade, joints and possible damage. Eligibility and process belong with the City; our role is to provide clear excavation scope when open work is part of the project.

Sewer Line Installation scope
- Open-trench sewer lateral excavation
- Bedding and backfill support
- Access pits for approved trenchless work
- Old-line exposure and removal coordination
- Surface restoration and final grading
Every property is different. The estimate should spell out access, excavation, material, hauling, compaction, restoration and any work handled by another licensed trade. That gives you a number you can actually use.
Plan around water, access and approvals
Before digging, confirm ownership, permit responsibilities, inspection timing and the licensed plumber’s specifications. Older properties can have undocumented utilities, roots and tight access. A little coordination here is worth a lot more than another hole later.

Albany sewer line excavation FAQs
Does C&H perform the plumbing connection?
Our scope is excavation and related site work. A properly licensed plumbing contractor handles work that requires that license.
What is Albany’s sewer lateral program?
The City offers a one-time replacement process for certain qualifying private laterals. Contact Albany Public Works to confirm current eligibility and steps.
Can every sewer line be replaced by pipe bursting?
No. Access, pipe condition, route, connections and approval determine whether trenchless work is suitable.
